"This process ensures the lantern's structural integrity " says Andrew III. "A soldered lantern will not hold up over time against the constant flame." Bevolo Gas and Electric Lights began in the French Quarter in 1945 when Andrew Bevolo Sr. revolutionized the production of gas lamps. A master craftsman who worked to help build the famous New Orleans Higgins boats for the war effort and the first Sikorsky helicopter Bevolo Sr. combined technical know-how with artistic style by using rivets instead of brittle soldering for his lamps’ joints and by employing the talents of local artists and craftspeople. Soon Bevolo Sr. along with renowned architect A. Hays Town had created what would become known as the French Quarter lamp. Try taking a step through the old French Quarter without catching a glimpse of this now iconic copper lamp and you’ll soon find that it simply can’t be done.

Bevolo Gas & Electric Lights enjoys greater flexibility since all stations were standardized. The new production focus on individual station cells allows craftsmen to perform multiple tasks instead of one repetitive task and allows for more self-direction increasing job satisfaction. It also requires less handling of individual parts and finished products resulting in easier flow of materials across the shop floor. Bevolo Gas & Electric Lights increased their throughput by approximately 30 percent with no increase in personnel.

Ever wonder where those great old gas fixtures in the French Quarter come from? They're all the work of Drew Bevolo his uncle or his grandfather. Since 1945 Bevolo Gas and Electric Lights has been producing the distinctive copper lanterns that grace the Cabildo Jackson Square Brennan's Restaurant The Omni Royal Orleans and hundreds of other buildings and courtyards. Still based in the Vieux Carre the business has grown to include customers in 50 states and 26 countries with each fixture still individually hand-crafted and hand-riveted by coppersmiths schooled in traditional methods of metalworking. Beginning with solid sheets of copper the craftsmen use shears templates and old machinery to fashion the dozens of established styles or new designs
requested by architects and designers.

propane lights. The Coleman 2 mantel propane light with electric start is by far the best lantern I have ever used.
This light is so easy and clean anybody can use it. The propane cylinder is much easier than carrying a can of gas every where you go plus it is a cleaner burn. Because the propane is a cleaner burning fuel it is also brighter I have never seen a 2 mantel lantern as bright as this one.
As far as the electric start as far as I am concerned it is the only way to go from now on I will never go back to a match. All you have to do is turn the gas on and push a button it is as easy as that No more worrying about burning your fingers when it lights. I am extremely glad I spent the extra money for the convienence of the electric start.
Over all just like all Coleman products this is very well built lightweight and easy to use I would recommend this light for anybody who wants dependable bright light while camping. World's best gas lantern. Bevolo gaslights offera constant flame effect with possible effects

The first lamp was invented around 70,000 BC. A hollow rock, shell or other natural found object was filled with moss or a similar material that was soaked with animal fat and ignited. Humans began imitating the natural shapes with manmade pottery, alabaster, and metal lamps. Wicks were later added to control the rate of burning. Around the 7th century BC, the Greeks began making terra cotta lamps to replace handheld torches. The word lamp is derived from the Greek word lampas, meaning torch.
In the 18th century, the central burner was invented, a major improvement in lamp design. The fuel source was now tightly enclosed in metal, and a adustable metal tube was used to control the intensity of the fuel burning and intensity of the light. Around the same time, small glass chimneys were added to lamps to both protect the flame and control the flow of air to the flame. Ami Argand, a Swiss chemist is credited with first developing the principal of using an oil lamp with a hollow circular wick surrounded by a glass chimney in 1783.
Early lighting fuels consisted of olive oil, beeswax, fish oil, whale oil, sesame oil, nut oil, and similar substances. These were the most commonly used fuels until the late 18th century. However, the ancient Chinese collected natural gas in skins that was used for illumination.
In 1859, drilling for petroleum oil began and the kerosene (a petroleum derivative) lamp grew popular, first introduced in 1853 in Germany. Coal and natural gas lamps were also becoming wide-spread. Coal gas was first used as a lighting fuel as early as 1784.
In 1792, the first commercial use of gas lighting began when William Murdoch used coal gas for lighting his house in Redruth, Cornwall. German inventor Freidrich Winzer (Winsor) was the first person to patent coal gas lighting in 1804 and a “thermolampe” using gas distilled from wood was patented in 1799.
Early in the 19th century, most cities in the United States and Europe had streets that were gaslight. Gas lighting for streets gave way to low pressure sodium and high pressure mercury lighting in the 1930s and the development of the electric lighting at the turn of the 19th century replaced gas lighting in homes.

Beveled glass, external hook-up
an external hookup. In most cases, the bottom scroll arm is used as the gas conduit; in this situation, the valve and tubing are exposed. We cut a hole in the backplate big enough to accomodate the stub-out and shut off valve, then then fed the burner assembly inside the fixture. In this fashion, we were able to keep the fixtures centered on the wall, minimize the external hardware, and satisfy the plumbing inspector.
This fixture is almost identical to the Mediterranean.

on custom lights.
open flame burner assemblies or ignition systems separately.
Our usual lead time is 6 - 8 weeks. Kindly allow at least 10 - 12 weeks for custom light manufacturing; projects with intricate detailing will require more time.
Lamps that consumes propane -OR- interior, open flame lamps must be fitted with a safety device. Should the flame extinguish, this device automatically shuts off the gas. We do not recommend indoor lanterns fueled by propane.
While we specialize in custom gas lights, please know that all fixtures shown are available in electric. Excluding our handcrafted lanterns and custom fabrication, electric versions are discounted.
In an effort to continually improve our products, we reserve the right to change designs, materials, prices, or specifications without prior notice.
Our gas and electric fixtures are available as yoke pendants, wall lights, post lamps, and pier mounts.
Our hand-crafted lanterns are available in light, medium, and darkened bronze, as well as custom powder-coated finishes and in-house patinas. We offer finishes that withstand 1200 degrees. These colors are: Charcoal, Metallic Black, Metallic Brown, Goldenfire Brown, Honey Glow Brown, Moss Green Metallic, Forest Green, Redwood, Mahogany Metallic, Rich Brown Metallic, and Bark Brown. The flake in the metallic colors is tiny, and lends a sheen and reflective quality without detracting from the hue. These in-house finishes are available for all of our fixtures and are a refreshing (and durable) change of pace.
The bracket will determine the overall height of a hand-crafted lantern. Wall mounted models are available with a drop-in or a gooseneck bracket. Ceiling lights require a yoke. Cast decorative light posts, straight aluminum or steel light poles, and pier mount bases have a standard, 3" o.d. fit. (If you require a very large lamp on a post taller than 10', a 4" o.d. collar / post are highly recommended.) The brackets for our hand-crafted lanterns are welded steel, cleaned, then powder-coated in matte black.
Lanterns made of cast aluminum or cast brass are available in the following factory finishes: Cracked Hide, Midnight, Natural Russett, Old Iron, Rust, Verde, and Village Green. Some cast aluminum fixtures have a factory brass trim option, and those finishes are Brushed Chrome, Hand-Rubbed Bronze, Pewter, Polished Brass, and Verdegris. The height and width of these fixtures are measured from extremity to extremity. If we modify the fixture (change the finial or add decorative leaf banding, for example), the height & width would change slightly. If you are operating with close tolerances and need specific dimensions, please call us; we are happy to help.
We encourage you to speak with your contractor, builder, architect, or plumber regarding plumbing codes in your area; gas lamps are considered gas burning appliances.
